On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected a request from US tech giant Google to overturn an order from the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) which denied an interim stay on a penalty of Rs 1,337 crore imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
The court ordered Google to deposit 10% of the penalty within 7 days and instructed the NCLAT to make a decision on Google’s appeal against the CCI order by March 31st. The company has been given 3 working days to approach the NCLAT for the appeal.
The NCLAT had previously denied the interim stay and required the deposit of 10% of the penalty on January 4th, and had accepted Google’s challenge to the CCI’s fine for allegedly abusing the dominant position of its Android smartphone operating system in India.
